Korean artist Hellen Choo’s jubilant, frenzied and playful canvases developed through many challenges, difficulties and re-evaluations. Educated in England and at the Rhode Island School of Design before returning to Seoul and starting a design firm, her life has been marked by a series of fundamental changes and tumultuous adaptations, each of which informs her practice. In every acrylic and oil stick composition she brings together often-innumerable forms, shades and lines, and lends an organic harmony to these disparate elements.
Choo achieves this subtle balance amongst her many dynamic forms through a process of layering, revisiting canvases over months, covering certain elements while accentuating others. Her approach lends inexhaustible depth to each bright, shimmering painting, hinting at the struggles that gave birth to such joyous outbursts in a manner that evokes the raw emotions of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s work. Under the guise of similarly child-like or primitive scrawling, Choo gives beautiful expression to our capacity for self-renewal. From every hardship comes immensely profound emotional growth.

Press Release: Hellen Choo is an artist whose works explore the relationship between painting, artistic expression and personal experience. Busy surfaces incorporate natural and artificial elements, sometimes frenetic, sometimes frozen and still. Each painting is individual, and Choo’s style shifts according to her feelings and the subject matter. Her color palette includes many bright, vibrant hues, but these are always handled with subtle mastery that produces harmonious compositions capable of creating a profound dialogue with the viewer. Hellen Choo currently lives and works in her native Seoul, Korea.

벌써 세 번째 개인전이 다가왔고 내가 그림을 그리는 이유에 대해 다시 한 번 생각하게 되었다. 과연 나의 그림은 어떤 의미 를 가질 수 있을까? 어렸을 때부터 한가지 분명했던 것은 아무 이유 없이도 나는 그림을 그리면 편안해진다는 것 이였다. 어렸을 때부터 혼자 지내서인지 외로움이 많았고 흰 도화지나 캔버스 앞에 서면 그 누구보다 자신감이 생겼고 무슨 말이든 들어줄 것 같았다. 지금도 마찬가지이다.나는 하루 종일 그림을 그리는 사람이 아니다. 나는 디자인 매니저란 직업이 있으며 매일 10시부터 6시까지(가끔은 밤도 새며!) 돈을 벌기 위해 디자인 일을 한다. 하지만 매일 매일 나의 일과가 끝난 후 나는 캔버스 앞에 선다. 매일 88도로를 타고 집에 오는 내 앞에 펼쳐지는 한강의 모습은 아이포드에서 나오는 음악과 융합되어 그날 밤 캔버스 안으로 들어간다. 주말에 친구들과 만나 신나게 음악을 듣고 술을 마시고 집에 돌아온 후에도 나는 캔버스 앞에 서서 그날 느꼈던 군중의 열기, 북적거리는 홍대 길 등을 스케치하곤 한다. 매시간 캔버스 앞에 앉아 있는다고 좋은 작품은 나오지 않는다. 많은 교류와 움직임 그리고 배움 아래 전율을 느끼고 나의 몸 구석구석은 그 느낌을 기억한다. 이런 행동패턴에 의해 그려진 나의 그림들은 어떤 의미 를 가질 수 있을까? 1800년대 유럽, 특히 파리 인상파들의 작품을 보고 있으라면 그때의 사람들, 분위기, 차마 냄새 까지 느낄 수 있는 것처럼 나의 그림들은 21세기 ‘서울에 살고 있는20대'가 느낄 수 있는 사랑과 에너지, 음악 그리고 젊음을 나타낸다. 19세기 후반 파리의 술집 구석에서 엡신트를 마시고 있는 광경이 있노라면 21세기 서울에서는 클럽의 디제이 셋에 맞추어 음악에 몸을 맡기고 데킬라를 들이키는 젊은이들이 있다. 달빛을 받은 샹젤리제 거리를 묘사한 작품이나 달빛을 받은 마포대교를 운전하며 지나가며 보이는 광경이나 시대만 다를 뿐 작가가 느끼는 감정은 비슷하지 않을까. 나의 작품들에서는 내가 그날 그때, 그 장소에서 느꼈던 감정들이 고스란히 녹아있다. 나에게는 전율을 느끼게 해준 순간들이며 아름다움으로 다가온 피사체들이다.
